'Take Your Shoes Off'
The Street Worker Training programme
Unlike traditional training courses, ‘Take Your Shoes Off' encompasses training for street work-related skills as well as a focus on developing the person of the street worker; his/her talents, interests, motivation, confidence and commitment.
The programme content aims to meet learning outcomes related to the knowledge, attitudes and skills required to work with street children. The ‘experience' is relevant to all those who are already doing street work, those who are thinking about doing street work, and other stakeholders at all levels who are committed to, and interested in, supporting and investing in the lives of street children. The opportunity to establish networks and benefit from shared experiences is at the centre of our approach.
The Enhanced Training Programme is delivered through the following five modules:
1. Core Programme - An Introduction to Street Work (4 days)
The central theme is the role of the street worker in the life of a street child and the significance of relationships (Street Worker/ street child and inter-agency) as a basis for change and improvement in the life circumstances of street children. Within the core programme participants will develop action plans to take their learning from the training room back into their work and at a re-call day will reconvene to review their learning. The core programme is a prerequisite to any further modules.
2. Training of Trainers (2 days)
Selected from the participant group in the core programme, a maximum of 4 local workers will be trained in knowledge, attitudes and skills required to source and train their own workers. This module follows the core programme. This part of the strategy emphasises local ownership of the training.
3. Local trainers training
The 4 local trainers are tasked with the design, delivery and evaluation of their own training to a local participant group of 10. This will be done within 6 months of the core programme.
4. Monitoring and mentoring
The above local training will be monitored by the StreetInvest trainer and local trainers will be mentored and supported in the delivery of their training.
5. Street Worker Shadowing *
"I follow you in your work on a typical day /night like your shadow. I observe, listen, ask questions and in turn share my experiences."
A host agency working with street children invites up to 8 workers from other agencies (regionally or nationally) to accompany their workers in their day to day job. Shadowing is a type of work experience. It is intended to be a mutual learning experience providing an opportunity for everyone involved to better understand one another's role and purpose in relation to street children.
